While MMI is currently a subsidiary company of the Emirates Group, its roots stretch back to its founding as the Gray Mackenzie Company in 1891, which then became Maritime & Mercantile International LLC in 1983.
To MMI these hundred plus years in Dubai mean much more than growth.
These are years in which MMI has taken the initiative again and again to explore new opportunities, take on new challenges and help the development of Dubai.
This marked the beginning of the long and successful relationship between Gray Mackenzie & Co, (which later became Maritime & Mercantile International, MMI) and the then Trucial States, which became the United Arab Emirates in 1971.
MMI can trace its origins back to 1862 when, in Basra, Iraq, a partnership known as Gray Mackenzie & Co was formed between Archibald Gray, Edwin Sandy Dawes, John Halliday and Sir George Mackenzie. 29 years later in 1891 Gray Mackenzie & Co was appointed as the licensed shipping agents in Dubai.
Gray Mackenzie & Co received their first official lease of an office building in 1916 from the Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Saeed Bin Maktoum Al Maktoum. In 1930, the same year that the first automobile arrived in the Trucial States, His Highness Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, commissioned the construction of the original Gray Mackenzie & Co offices.
Over the ensuing years as Gray Mackenzie & Co grew from strength to strength and so did the Trucial States. Some of the key milestones include;
1941 Setting up of the postal services
1946 The first bank opens its doors
1956 The police force is formed
1963 Dubai Petroleum Company (DPC) is formed
1964 Gray Mackenzie & Co moves into new offices, the Al Ras building.
1965 The Trucial States Council is formed with the support of the British Government
1971 The United Arab Emirates is formed with His Royal Highness Sheikh Zayed as President.
1982 Gray Mackenzie & Co changes its name to MMI, Maritime & Mercantile International llc.
2000 MMI becomes a subsidiary of the prestigious Emirates Group.
2006 MMI divests all non core business units, and focuses solely on liquor.
